New Legislation Will Increase Oversight of Balconies, Save Lives

I am grateful to Gov. Jerry Brown for signing SB 721, legislation that will set standards for inspection of balconies and decks to prevent tragedies like the Library Gardens balcony collapse in June 2015 that killed six students. After that terrible tragedy, Berkeley led the way to make sure all load-bearing, elevated exterior elements of apartment buildings were regularly inspected and imposed fines on landlords who don’t comply. Thank you Governor Brown for passing legislation that will keep developers accountable and save lives.
