Berkeley Remains Committed to Sanctuary Despite Federal Threats
Berkeley has a long tradition of offering sanctuary to the persecuted, going back to the Vietnam War. We believe that everyone living in the Unites States has certain basic rights under the Constitution, including undocumented community members. We all want to live in safe places, and in Berkeley, we think this is best achieved when our residents know the Berkeley Police Department is here to serve all in our diverse community, so that anyone can call to report a crime, participate in an investigation, and thereby make our community safer for everyone.
Berkeley is among more than 600 cities and counties have adopted similar policies. Let me be clear: despite threats from the federal government, we will continue to be a Sanctuary City.
