Statement on Governor's Executive Action on Homelessness
January 8, 2020
Mayor Jesse Arreguin issued the following statement regarding Governor Gavin Newsom’s executive order to address California’s homeless crisis.
“In the shadows of California’s prosperity lies unprecedented poverty that affects all communities across the state. It is clear that significant investment is needed to lift up people experiencing homelessness. I applaud Governor Newsom for making homelessness a priority and for his Executive Order. This action recognizes that homelessness is an emergency that requires swift and bold action. We need to cut red tape and make land and resources available to address the growing crisis of unsheltered homelessness. This action will help cities and counties throughout California address homelessness decisively and compassionately. The City of Berkeley will be seeking these new resources to provide additional shelter, sanitation and respite for those living on the streets.”
