Berkeley Mayor Statement on Yesterday's Events in Washington DC
STATEMENT ON YESTERDAY’S EVENTS IN WASHINGTON DC
Mayor Arreguín has Media Availability to Discuss the Attack on Our Nation’s Capital and What Must Be Done to Safeguard Democracy Moving Forward
BERKELEY – Today, Berkeley Mayor Jesse Arreguín released the following statement in response to yesterday’s attempt to undermine the will of voters nationwide:
“What we witnessed yesterday in our nation’s capital was nothing short of an armed attack on our democracy, encouraged and incited by the President himself.
What occurred in Washington DC yesterday was a predictable consequence of Donald Trump’s continuous conspiratorial attacks on our institutions, laws, traditions, and values. But Donald Trump is not single-handedly responsible.
Elected officials and public servants across the country failed the American people. They prioritized party over country and ambition over public interest.
President-elect Joe Biden often states we are in a battle for the heart and soul of this great nation. Let us remember that democracy is fragile. Democracy is an ongoing act, and we all have important roles to play. As sickening as this attack was, the undermining of American democracy will not succeed, and we will continue to strive towards building a more perfect Union.
I look forward to the inauguration of President-elect Joe Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris on January 20 as we work on healing these deep wounds. I am well aware of how much work lies ahead. Yet I am hopeful our best days are yet to come.”
